Householders

Recycling Centres:

You can bring any electrical or electronic item of any size to any of the six Recycling Centres for FREE.

This includes anything with a battery or a plug, for example large domestic appliances, toasters, TVs, mobile phones, calculators, hair dryers, toys.

Bring WEEE back to the Retailer for Free

Householders can bring back their old electrical or electronic items to retailers for free when they purchase new equipment on a like for like basis. There is no time limit for this option.

Delivery

A retailer must collect an old piece of equipment when delivering a new item,

• if the retailer has given a householder 24 hours' notice of delivery,
• and your old item is ready for collection i.e. not connected to any electrical, gas or water supply, waste water pipe or permanent structure.
• If the item is not available for immediate collection the householder can return the item to the store or to a recycling centre.
• If however, the retailer has not given 24hours' notice of delivery the householder can ask the retailer to return and take the old item back within 15 days.  

Buying Online or from catalogues etc

The retailer must ensure that WEEE can be returned free of charge on a one-for-one basis. They must also place a visible notice on their website, catalogue or advertisements etc, indicating free take-back on a one-for-one basis. The 24 hours' notice / 15 days from date of delivery conditions outlined above also apply here.

FREE take back of small electrical or electronic goods at larger stores

Larger electrical stores with a sales are greater than 400 sq mt must take back small electrical and electronic items (less than 25cm) free of charge without any obligation to purchase a new one.

Retailers

Retailers of electrical and electronic equipment are obliged to register each of their premises  with Donegal County Council, and must re-register annually by 31st January. The registration fee is €200. Alternatively, retailers can register with WEEE Ireland for free, this is a once off registration.
